3 Tips For Choosing A Medicare Plan During The Open Enrollment Period

by Gene Jones

During the open enrollment period of Medicare, you need to decide if you want to stay with your current plan or if a different plan will better fit your needs. You have one chance each year to change your health plan. During this time period, you need to consider if your healthcare plan provides you with the coverage, convenience, and customer service you need and fits within your budget.

Element #1: Coverage

The first thing you need to consider is the type of coverage you are able to get from your insurance. This starts by being aware of your health needs, which can change from one year to the next.

Start by making a list of the type of doctors you are seeing and that you need to see. Does your current plan cover all the types of doctors and treatments you need? If it doesn't, examine other plans and see if you will get access to all the treatments and support you need, such as personal health devices or meal assistance.

If your current plan doesn't give you all the coverage you need, make a list of what you need and use that list to determine if any other Medicare plans in your area can provide you with that level of coverage.

Element #2: Convenience

Second, you need to consider how easy it is for you to use your plan. Do you have to drive far away in order to access all the doctors and specialists that you need access to? Is there another plan that will allow you to see health care providers who live closer to your home?

It should not feel like an adventure in order to get the medical care you need. Look for a Medicare plan where you can more easily get the medical care you need.

Element #3: Customer Service

Third, carefully consider the type of customer service you are getting from your current healthcare plan. Are they able to quickly respond to your questions and issues? Are they able to meet your healthcare needs?

If your current healthcare plan provides you with extra customer service, consider sticking with them. If they don't provide you with the service you need, consider switching to a healthcare plan that can better meet your needs.

When open enrollment time comes for Medicare, carefully consider if your current plan meets your coverage, convenience, and customer service needs. If it doesn't, now is the time to look for a new plan that meets those needs.
